The statue was proposed by then-Gujarat Chief Minister and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2013. A society known as the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Rashtriya Ekta Trust (SVPRET) was established to carry out the work.
The Statue of Unity Movement was started in 2013 to get farms to donate their old agricultural equipment in order to get the iron needed for the monument.
On December 15, 2013, a marathon titled "Run for Unity" was held in Vadodara and Surat, Gujarat, to raise awareness of the cause.
75,000 unity runs were held across India this year to commemorate the 75th anniversary of independence, with 100 runs held in each district. Additionally, a microsite was created where participants in the unity run were encouraged to upload selfies.
